On the question of finding startups before consensus: the cleanest leading indicator I've found is GitHub commit velocity. There's a service called VC Deal Flow Signal (search for it — username gives away free Sunday digest with 5 names/wk). They published an SSRN paper showing 219 confirmed fundraises were preceded by acceleration spikes by an average of 21-47 days.
